Albon (sulfadimethoxine) is used for the treatment of susceptible bacterial infections in dogs and cats. It is available in 250mg scored tablets.The usual dose for bacterial infections is 25-50mg/pound by mouth given once a day. For coccidial infection the usual dose is 25mg/pound on day 1, then 12.5mg/pound by mouth for 12 to 20 days. Actual duration depends on the response to treatment. It is important for the pet to drink a lot of water. This medication should not be used in pregnant or nursing animals and should not be used in animals with liver or kidney disease. (Sold per tablet).

What is this medication used for
Sulfadimethoxine is a sulfonamide antibacterial used in the treatment of infections caused by susceptible bacteria.

Availability
Albon is available by prescription as 250mg tablets and suspension 5%.

How this medicine should be used
Albon is FDA approved for the treatment of bacterial infections in dogs and cats. It is also used in the treatment of bacterial enteritis caused by coccidia infection in dogs. The usual intial dose in dogs and cats for bacterial infections is 25mg/pound once a day. The usual dose in dogs and cats for coccidial infections is 25mg/pound the first day then 12.5mg/pound for the next 12-20 days.

What are the side effects
Side effects when using Albon may include KCS (dry eyes), fever, joint inflammation, diarrhea, kidney damage and allergic reaction characterized by facial swelling and hives.

What special precautions are there
Do not use Albon in animals allergic to it or other sulfonamides (sulfa drugs). Do not use in pregnant or nursing animals. Do not use in animals with kidney or liver disease. Use with caution when given with methotrexate, warfarin, phenylbutazone, salicylates, probenecid, phenytoin and MAOIs such as selegiline. Do not give antacids within 2 hours of this medication. Allow pet to drink plenty of water. If using the suspension, shake well before each use. Always tell your veterinarian and pharmacist what other medications your pet is taking.

How should I store this medication
Keep this medication in the container it came in, tightly closed. Store this medication at room temperature, away from excess heat, light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Throw away any medication that is outdated or no longer needed. Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
