The prostate is a gland, which surrounds the urethra (urine canal) near the bladder in male animals. The purpose of the prostate is the
production of sperm fluid during breeding.
As in man, this gland may cause problems, especially in the older, non-neutered pet.
Infection (prostatitis) ----------------- bladder or blood infections can settle into the gland
Enlargement (benign hyperplasia) - due to hormonal imbalances
Cancer --------------------------------- less common in dogs than in man
Cysts ----------------------------------- fluid or infection filled sacs form within the gland structure
SYMPTOMS OF PROSTATE DISEASE
Pain in the rear quarters
A "hunched-up" appearance to the back
Straining to defecate - the pet may appear constipated
Straining to urinate - there may be blood in the urine
Discharge from the penis - can be either pus or blood
The treatment of prostate disease depends upon your pet's symptoms and the number of times that the problem has occurred.
Methods of treatment include:
Antibiotics - cultures of the urine may be needed, especially in chronic cases
Hormone therapy
Castration - more common in animals as it often completely resolves the problem
Surgery on the gland itself - more common in man than animals
